EIGHT TIPS FOR A GREAT ABSTRACT

Abstract Inspiration

Here are eight tips that will help you take your abstract from good to great.

1. Your research is worthy

Preparing the abstract may seem challenging, but start with the view that your research matters, your experience is relevant, and your work can make a difference. All abstracts relevant to the topics of innovation, complication avoidance, neurocritical care, neuro-oncology, spine, neurovascular, neurotrauma, paediatrics, and ethics in neurosurgery are welcome.
2. Get a head start

Don’t leave it too late! Be sure to allow yourself enough time to prepare your abstract without stress. Write a first draft, take a break, and look at it again with fresh eyes.
3. Follow the guidelines

Make sure you know what is required before you start the submission process. Choose the correct abstract category . Is your abstract concise, coherent, well organised, and does it include all the required sections? You can always make amendments after you submit, but rather get it close to perfect the first time.
4. Take a different approach

What viewpoint on your research will make it interesting to the review panel? What gaps in the existing science are you addressing? How are you exhibiting thought leadership?
5. Tell your story clearly

Describe the story of your research clearly and succinctly. What did you aim to do, how did you do it, what did you learn? Objectives, methods, results, and conclusions are part of the story.
6. What matters most about your work?

What is groundbreaking about your work? What is new, novel, or innovative about your research? Why is your research important? Explain how your work can and will make a significant contribution to the field.
7. First impressions matter

Your title should define the subject but also capture the interest of the reader.
8. Ask for input from a colleague

Ask a colleague for their opinion to make sure that what you are trying to get across is clear. Does your abstract adequately describe the research you’ve performed? Will the review panel see quality, originality, and thoroughness? A colleague could also help make sure that your writing is clear and that there are no mistakes or typos.
